From the time of the Cold War policy of propping up dictators to the current failing democratization efforts, U.S. meddling in the Middle East has nearly always produced harmful results. If it hopes to succeed, according to Washington Institute Fellow Mohammad Yaghi, the U.S. government must first establish peace. Only after peace, he explains, will freedom and democracy ensue.
