Description: This paper examines changes in Egyptian political Islam and evaluates views of mainstream Islamists of the EU polices and initiatives regarding democracy in the Mediterranean region. The discussion focuses on the Muslim Brothers, Egypt"s main opposition force, and the Wasat Party, representing an evolving Islamic centrist orientation. The author concludes that the commonalities between the two groups regarding their views of the EU outweigh the differences because of their shared Islamic frame of reference and a perceived inconsistency of EU policies in the region.
