Egypt Cyber Activists Receive Warnings to Close Down their YouTube, Flickr Accounts

Egyptian blogger Wael Abbas told Ikhwanweb Sunday that he received several warnings from YouTube administration that his account might be closed down because of a video of torturing a woman he once broadcasted through his blog.

Abbas said this is not the first time he receives these warnings. His account has been once closed down, and when he asked for clarification YouTube sent him a confirmation that the website advocates freedom of expression.

Abbas added that entire blogs have been removed as well as Facebook accounts, which send negative signals to cyber activists, and restricts their movement.

Abbas called on "free nations" that sponsors these sites to enact laws that prevent them from surrendering to pressures from despotic countries that want to ban any material that exposes them.

In the same context, Egyptian blogger Hossam el-Hamalawy complained from receiving similar warnings to close down his account on Flickr.

Egyptian cyber activists have played an essential role in exposing several torture cases and publicizing them, as well as other forms of corruption inside Egypt. Many of them have been subject to state harassment and detentions that aimed at stopping their activism on the internet.
