The British foreign office spokesman John Wilkes has said that there was a possibility for opening dialog with the Hamas Movement in the event a Palestinian national unity government was formed and in the event the Hamas-Fatah dialog succeeded in reaching a Palestinian reconciliation.

Addressing a press conference held at the British ambassador"s residence in Amman on Saturday, Wilkes said that his country would have contacts with the Lebanese Hizbullah party following the internal Lebanese entente.

He said that his government hopes that the new Israeli foreign minister would explain his government"s position regarding the Middle East settlement process. He urged Israel to harmonize with the world community"s appeal regarding a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The foreign office spokesman said that London had informed Tel Aviv of its objection to the settlement activity and the attacks on Palestinian homes in east Jerusalem. He noted that his country did not export arms to Israel over the past few years with the exception of radio equipment for the Israeli navy.
