Hamas has extended condolences to the Arab and Islamic Nation in general and the Lebanese people in particular over the death of Fathi Yakan, one of the prominent Islamic propagators and thinkers who died on Saturday.

The movement said in a statement that the deceased had left behind a great legacy, recalling that Yakan, who was born in 1933, was one of the founders of the Islamic Movement in Lebanon in the fifties of the past century and had left a number of very important books in Islamic ideology some of which were translated into foreign languages.

The Hamas office in Beirut issued a similar statement mourning the death of Yakan, describing him as one of the contemporary Islamic prominent figures who championed Arab and Islamic issues topped by the Palestine cause.

Yakan won the parliamentary elections in Tripoli, northern Lebanon, in 1992, and participated in many international Islamic conferences. He advocated national unity and spurned strife.
