Moussa Ghannam of the MB Parliamentary bloc questioned the necessity of altering the Matrouh governorate's emblem. The redesigning and changing of the emblem will cost millions of pounds, which may have been spent more wisely elsewhere.

Mohamed Khaleel, Matrouh's governor decided the change was necessary, reflecting the progress in line with the idea of new developments and globalization. Khaleel had received the approval of Abdul Salam Mahgoub, head of the security department.

The new logo depicts palm trees, a mining tower symbolizing petrol fields and olive branches and waves.
