Egypt: Eight university students held incommunicado - fears of torture
Egyptian State Security Investigation (SSI) forces arrested eight students on 28 October 2009 on accusations of membership to the Muslim Brotherhood - they were held for three days incommunicado at Zagaziq Police Station and then transferred on 30 October 2009 to Damanhour prison. During the students three days incommunicado detention at Zagaziq Police, they were exposed to ill-treatment and subjected to insults and beatings at the hands of the SSI.

Egyptian State Security Investigation (SSI) forces arrested eight students on 28 October 2009 on accusations of membership to the Muslim Brotherhood - they were held for three days incommunicado at Zagazig Police Station and then transferred on 30 October 2009 to Damanhour prison. During the students three days incommunicado detention at Zagaziq Police, they were exposed to ill-treatment and subjected to insults and beatings at the hands of the SSI.

Their names are as follows:

1. Ahmad Mohamad Ali Aayadeen, 22 years old.
2. Abdullah Ahmad Aliwa Qarma, 22 years old.
3. Mohamad Sameer Ali Safaayi, 20 years old.
4. Mohamad Nisar Aatiya, 20 years old.
5. Ahmad al-Said Younis, 18 years old.
6. Ibrahim Ali Farag Mohamad, 20 years old.
7. Ahmad Mahmoud Mohamad Mitalawi, 19 years old.
8. Ahmad al-Said Abdulazziz al-Ala, 18 years old.

These arrests follow in the trend of mass arrests of accused of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood. On 27 October 2009, Alkarama submitted a communication of 112 cases to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD), regarding this recent increase of mass arrests and arbitrary detentions in Egypt since July 2009.

Alkarama continues to gather information regarding this situation with the intention of submitting their cases to the Special Rapporteur on Torture (SRT) and WGAD.
