Tunisia judge keeps journalist imprisoned

A Tunisian judge refused to free a journalist who says his six-month prison sentence for assault is politically motivated, and delayed a verdict on an appeal, a defense lawyer said on Saturday.

Judge Mohamed Ali Chouika said journalist Taoufik Ben Brik must stay in jail awaiting the appeal decision on January 30, lawyer Radhia Nasraoui said.

Libya to invest $1 billion in Uganda

Libya is prepared to spend as much as $1 billion financing the construction of an oil refinery in Uganda should the East African country go ahead with the project, New Vision reported, without citing anyone.

Libya, which was visited by the Ugandan President last week, will provide the investment through its Libya Africa Investments Portfolio, the Kampala- based newspaper reported.

Uganda’s oil and gas industry may attract as much as $10 billion in investment, it said.

Sudan sets two-month deadline for rebels

Negotiations between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel groups must be completed within two months, ahead of Sudan’s presidential and legislative elections, a senior official has said.

“Some groups are demanding more time. We have told mediators that time is running out and that negotiations must not exceed the third week of March,” Sudan’s Minister of Culture Amin Hassan Omar said in Doha late Sunday.

“Talks do not require a month or two as outstanding issues are simple. If parties have the political resolve it won’t take more than two weeks as we have discussed everything and what remains is to take decisions,” he said.

Ethiopian plane crashes in Beirut

An Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on Monday morning shortly after it took off in stormy weather from the airport in Beirut, Lebanon.

Airline officials said 82 passengers and 8 crew members were on board, although the Lebanese military, quoted by the Lebanese National News Agency, said 97 passengers and crew were aboard. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.

“The flight lost contact with Lebanese air traffic controllers shortly after takeoff,” said Wogayehu Terefe, a spokeswoman for Ethiopian Airlines.
