The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) was shocked and surprised to learn that the well known Syrian Munshid (Islamic Singer) Mohammad Mustafa Masfaka “Abu Ratib” was arrested by the American Authorities as he returned from Canada to the USA via the Ambassador Bridge, Last Friday. According to newspaper reports, he has been accused of providing incorrect details about his work with the charitable organisation “The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development” between 1997 and 1998, a charity accused of funding Hamas, which is categorised as a terrorist organisation in the United States. Mohammed Mustafa Ali Masfaka (Abu Ratib) comes from the city of Aleppo, and is regarded as one of the teachers of modern Islamic Singing. He lives, works and studies in Detroit, USA, since the 1990s. SHRC considers this repressive measure as associated with the work of anti-Islamic groups within the USA. SHRC is also surprised at this arbitrary arrest and reason behind it, which effectively places the USA as a country which stifles freedoms. SHRC calls upon the American Authorities to immediately release Mohammed Mustafa Masfaka as he has not committed any crime that deserves arrest, and calls upon all those who work for human rights to campaign for his case and work for his release.
