Dr. Taleb Abu Sha’ar, the Palestinian minister of religious affairs, on Friday warned of an Israeli scheme aimed to multiply the Judaization projects in occupied Jerusalem and make the Palestinian natives a minority in their city. In a press release, Dr. Abu Sha’ar said that Israel’s apartheid wall cut off 165,000 Jerusalemites from their holy city. The minister affirmed that the Israeli government constantly brings more Jewish immigrants and settlers to the city and persists in imposing restrictions on the Palestinians and preventing them from building and expanding on their land. He pointed out that the Palestinians are practically allowed to build on about seven percent of their lands in eastern Jerusalem and they need a period of five to seven years in order to get a building license because of the very difficult conditions set by Israel. The minister called on the international community to take strong action against Israel and its settlers and curb the ongoing Judaization plans in Jerusalem. In a related incident, Palestinian residents of Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and foreign activists staged on Friday the largest protest since the beginning of this year against the displacement of families from their homes. The protesters chanted slogans against the Israeli occupation and the displacement of Palestinians from their homes in the neighborhood in the presence of hundreds of Israeli troops and policemen who spread all over the area. The Israeli police physically assaulted a Palestinian citizen and a female journalist which led to clashes with the protesters. The police used excessive force to disperse the protesters away from the Palestinian homes seized last year by Israeli settlers and arrested four foreign activists who defend the Jerusalemite families evicted from these homes in the neighborhood. During clashes, Gina Herald, a foreign activist, called on the western countries to open their eyes to the Judaization activities taking place in Jerusalem and the displacement of Palestinian natives from their homes and city. Herald said that it is time for everyone to wake up and move to eradicate the Israeli apartheid regime as the world did in South Africa. |
