Under the slogan, “Our return is certain and freedom for our prisoners,” the eighth Palestinians in Europe conference has kicked off today in the German capital Berlin with the participation of thousands of Palestinian refugees from across the European continent. The Palestinian crowds flocked this morning into the hall of Tempodrom in Berlin to participate in the opening session of the conference organized by the general-secretariat of Palestinians in Europe, the Palestinian return center in London and the Palestinian community in Germany (PGD) in cooperation with several organizations from Europe. Three Palestinian generations attended the conference to declare their adherence to the Palestinian rights, especially the right of return, and their loyalty to their national cause. Dr. Aziz Dweik, the speaker of the Palestinian legislative council, and Sheikh Ra’ed Salah, the head of the Islamic Movement in the 1948 occupied lands, are at the forefront of speakers at the conference that is receiving wide media coverage. In addition to the main opening meeting and three central symposiums, the conference will involve forums, workshops, special activities for youth and children and miscellaneous cultural events. A statement will be issued at the conclusion of the conference and will express on behalf of the Palestinians in Europe their position towards different topical national issues and highlight their adherence to the Palestinian rights and constants. Head of the conference and director of the Palestinian return center Majed Al-Zeer had stated ahead of the opening session that the conference this year is distinct in time because it is taking place as the Palestinians are marking the 62nd university of the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) and dealing with the most difficult moments in the history of their national cause. Zeer also highlighted the importance of the place, saying that holding the conference in Berlin has clear indications including that the segregation wall, which the Israeli occupation has established, will be doomed to destruction and that the will of free peoples will remain higher than walls and barriers. |
