Human rights commission appeals to President calling for Al-Shater's release

Al-Shater has in total spent over 10 years in Mubarak's prisons and after completing half of his current 7 year sentence he is entitled to parole for good conduct.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission has submitted an appeal to the Egyptian President calling for the  release of the Muslim Brotherhood's deputy chairman Eng. Khairat al-Shater and businessman Hassan Malik who have served over half of their harsh 7 year sentences for the renowned “al-Azhar Militia Case”.

During the initial hearing in criminal court no evidence was presented prompting the judiciary to throw out the case however intervention by the President ordered the re-opening of the case which was referred to a military court.

The commission urged the Egyptian government to eliminate the Emergency law which was renewed earlier this year with assurances that it would be used to combat terrorism and drug trafficking. The 'emergency law' has been in force for over 30 years under Mubarak's government and has continued to implement a number of crackdowns against activists and political opposition mainly from the MB in an effort to intimidate other opposition.

The commission called for the immediate release of al-Shater whose health has deteriorated, his companions and other political detainees and an end to the process of politicizing the judiciary.
