The judge maintained that Colonel Dursun Cicek was allegedly standing trial over the same affair at a civilian court in Istanbul . The decision was made after Cicek appeared before the military court over the plan which he apparently drew up last year while still allocated in Ankara at the general staff headquarters. Cicek’s plans had detailed actions intended to sever popular support for the AKP and one of its major supporters. Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen. Cicek, whose signature appears on the document, insists that it is fabricated and investigators have drawn up conflicting indictments over the document. Cicek may be facing life sentence on charges of attempting to overthrow the government and membership in a terrorist organisation in the trial which began last month in Istanbul The current investigations into a series of alleged anti-AKP schemes have roughly divided Turkey where some describe them as enhancing democracy while others see them as a government-sponsored campaign to disable the army and the secularist opposition. |
