Cairo-based Higher State Security Prosecution prolonged, on Wednesday Jan. 24, 2007, provisional detentions on 37 Muslim Brotherhood leaders, including Eng. Khairat Al Shater, the deputy chairman of the group. The detainees include: For his part, Abdul Monem Abdul Maqsoud, the MB lawyer, raised his eyebrows at the prosecution’s decision of prolonging the jail after ending all investigations since the MB detainees were arrested, confirming that it is an oppressive decision, specially that the MB detained weren’t convicted in the investigations and that releasing them will not harm the course of investigations . Abdul Maqsood attributed this decision to the government’s crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood, the biggest opposition group in the Egyptian Parliament, and amid the aggravating tensions between the MB and the regime during last period. |
