HAIFA, Three Arabs died in a gas leak at a Haifa oil refinery in the northern Palestinian territory occupied in 1948 Tuesday evening. Eight others were injured in the incident. Fingers were pointed at the refinery’s management for sacrificing Arab workers to stop the leak. Tamir Marjia, 33, George Zaatira, 31, and Tamir Al-Hajj, 18, from Yaffa and Nazareth passed away the incident. Five fellow refinery workers and two ambulance workers escaped with minor injuries. Israeli sources said hydrogen sulfide, a gas used in the oil refinery process, was leaking at the site resulting from a malfunction in the system. The situation exploded after the site’s Jewish operator dispatched Arab workers to replace a valve in the refinery system. Arabs at the site assigned blame for the deaths to the operator, claiming that he sent Arab workers to the site instead of Jewish workers, and that he was aware of the glitch in the system that would cause the emission of deadly gas. Israeli police arrived at the scene to investigate and settle potential clashes between the Arab workers and the family’s of the deceased in one corner and the Jewish workers and refinery management team in the other. |
