Corrupt leaders from the ousted Mubarak regime are banned from travelling as Egypt’s army chiefs shut down escape routes. A travel ban on all current and ex-government officials were imposed after former information minister Anas el-Fekki was caught trying to catch a plane out of Cairo airport where he was also placed under house arrest last night. Egypt's chief prosecutor also barred sacked prime minister Ahmed Nazif from leaving the country, and banned the widely despised former interior minister Habib al-Adly from travelling and had the assets of all three frozen. According to numerous sources the asset freeze was applied to Adly after his family was linked to the transfer of about four million Egyptian pounds from a private contractor to his personal account.
The chief prosecutor has also ordered the foreign ministry to freeze the assets of steel magnate Ahmed Ezz known to have accumulated his wealth illegitimately. Delighted crowds in Tahrir Square were ecstatic following the travel ban, along with a pledge made on Friday to hand power over to elected leaders.
Much of the protesters' fury was directed at Adly and the police force he oversaw as interior minister, which has been accused of widespread torture and extortion and was used to brutally crack down on political dissenters, with many from Egypt’s popular Muslim Brotherhood. The military council currently running Egypt stated it would pave the way for an elected civil authority to build a free democratic state, however, it would remain in place until a new authority could be sworn in. |
