Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq has submitted his resignation to the Supreme Armed Forces Council, on the eve of the scheduled “Friday of Determination".

The resigned PM had been appointed by the ousted Mubarak but had met with numerous opposition groups including the youth movements and Muslim Brotherhood who had called for the resignation of Shafiq's government amid a host of other revolutionary demands.

Former transport minister Essam Sharaf has been chosen to appoint a new government. Sharaf had previously served as transport minister from 2004-06, he then later returned to teach as a professor at Cairo’s University.
