Regulations concerning parties formation revealed

Major general Mamdouh Shahin announced Monday a new legislation to monitor the establishment of political parties in Egypt. According to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces the legislation will come into effect on Tuesday.

Major general Mamdouh Shahin announced Monday a new legislation to monitor the establishment of political parties in Egypt. According to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces the legislation will come into effecton Tuesday .

During a press conference Shahin confirmed that a judiciary will be formed to look into the measures of launching parties and ensure all applicants respect the new terms. He stressed that religious-based parties will not be acceptable.

A 30 day period has been specified to launch a political party, and a request must be sent by the applicants which in turn if accepted should receive a reply within 30 days to confirm they are a legitimate party.

The legislation charters that each party must have at least 5,000 members including 300 members from 10 different governorates.

Parties will be prevented from choosing members based on religion, sex, and language; furthermore parties must reveal the source of their funds.
