Triggering some confusion, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces announced new amendments to the law regulating electoral rights and elections.

Changes include the establishment of guidelines for the Supreme Committee to monitor elections, limiting membership to members of the judiciary.  The committee is expected to supervise all aspects of the electoral process.  Amendments also contain details regarding voter registration.

Since the referendum held in March, many of the newer parties have requested the postponement of elections arguing they needed more time to organize their constituency. They stressed that the Thursday text to the amendments contained some ambiguity regarding election dates. The Muslim Brotherhood however supports the elections run as scheduled.

During a press conference Thursday, General Mamdouh Shahin confirmed that elections will be held in September as previously scheduled.
