Muslim Brotherhood Slams Military Trials For Civilians

In a statement Tuesday, Deputy Chairman of MB Dr. Mahmoud Ezzat said that military trials do not guarantee full justice for the defendants, adding that Muslim Brothers were among the major victims of these trials during Hosni Mubarak's rule.

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) slammed the military trials for civilians as "unconstitutional" and contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In a statement Tuesday, Deputy Chairman of MB Dr. Mahmoud Ezzat said that military trials do not guarantee full justice for the defendants, adding that Muslim Brothers were the main victims of these trials during Hosni Mubarak's rule.

"Military Tribunals should only be for crimes committed by military personnel and in military barracks. We expected these measures to end after the revolution, and that every civilian should be referred to the normal civilian court," Ezzat added.

Ezzat expressed MB's disappointment with referring civilians for military trials, condemning issuing military verdicts against more than ten thousand civilians since the January 25 Revolution. He also called for retrying those convicted civilians before normal court, adding that it is ironic that those accused of murdering hundreds of peaceful protesters during the revolution and corrupting the country for decades are now being tried in normal courts and enjoying the due process.

Ezzat further stated that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) should now be in charge of two major duties: the military duty of defending the country which the MB appreciates, and the political role of ruling the country in the transitional period, which the MB demands to be based on dialogue, engaging all Egyptians, accepting criticism, and respecting freedoms. Only through this, the SCAF will retain the trust of all Egyptians, Ezzat added.
