Beltagy: We Support Egyptian Expats Voting and Full Review of Egyptian Embassies

Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, member of the Executive Office of the "Freedom and Justice" party (FJP), said that: “Enabling Egyptians abroad to vote was one of the most important seven demands that we made through the National Assembly for Change throughout 2010”.

Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, member of the Executive Office of the "Freedom and Justice" party (FJP), said that: “Enabling Egyptians abroad to vote was one of the most important seven demands that we made through the National Assembly for Change throughout 2010”.

Dr. Beltagy added, in a statement obtained by IkhwanWeb: "Egyptian expatriate vote is the natural right of a large community of Egyptians living abroad and involved in the financing of development and investment in the Egyptian homeland”.

He went on to say: “There is no disagreement over the need for the participation of Egyptians abroad in Egyptian public events and affairs (e.g. referendums, the presidential election, the new constitution)”.

As for the parliamentary elections, Dr. Beltagy stresses the importance of representation of Egyptian expatriates through an election to choose their representatives, for whom a proportion of Shura Council seats should be allocated, as appointed by the President of the Republic.

Dr. Beltagy stated that all Egyptian embassies and consulates abroad, which are supposed to oversee the elections instead of judges, are Egyptian entities which have not been changed, nor even touched by the revolution, in any way at all.

He added: “Many of these entities were established with security objectives in mind. The main role for at least some of them was to monitor Egyptians abroad, and to write security reports about them”.

He stressed that the entire electoral process’ integrity and impartiality may be questioned, if Egyptians abroad are to cast their votes in the current situation, something which would certainly leave a negative impact on the election results as a whole.
