Democractic Alliance Discusses Popular Demands in Meeting With SCAF

In a press statement following meeting between chief of staff of the armed forces Sami Anan, a number of political parties, including the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), confirmed that discussions took the form of a dialogue concerning the current situation, in particular the parliamentary electoral law.

In a press statement following meeting between chief of staff of the armed forces Sami Anan, a number of political parties, including the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), confirmed that discussions took the form of a dialogue concerning the current situation, in particular the parliamentary electoral law.

FJP leader Dr. Mohamed Morsi called for amendments to article 5 of the electoral law, which prohibits parties from competing for single-candidates list, and to issue a decree banning remnants of the former regime from participating or emerging onto the political landscape for a minimum of 10 years.

While (SCAF) decided to amend article 5 of the Election Law it failed to respond to demands of banning former NDP members rendering it unusual. Furthermore, despite demands to eliminate the emergency law, no official response was given. The statement stated that party leaders called for a timeline for the presidential elections to be held following the parliamentary and Shura council elections.

On his part, Dr. Wahid Abdul Magid, chairman of the Democratic Alliance's electoral committee stated that the coalition is expected to discuss its outcome of SCAF's meeting, and next step of action. Speaking to Ikhwanweb, Abdul Magid stated that the meeting failed to meet all the demands of the political forces.

"It appears the meeting was not very fruitful with nothing more than the exchange of the parties' visions and their expectations from SCAF concerning the upcoming elections."
