Gov't: Presidential Elections in Late May; Local Councils in July, August
Mohamed Ateyya, Egyptian Minister of People’s Assembly (PA) and Shura Council Affairs and Local Development, announced that the Presidential elections will take place late next May. Candidates would have 3 weeks to submit their papers as of March 10 – the date set for start of application. They would have 45 days for campaigning and presentation of their programs.

Mohamed Ateyya, Egyptian Minister of People’s Assembly (PA) and Shura Council Affairs and Local Development, announced that the Presidential elections will take place late next May. Candidates would have 3 weeks to submit their papers as of March 10 – the date set for start of application. They would have 45 days for campaigning and presentation of their programs. He also announced that the elections of local councils in the entire country will be held during the month of July, or August at the latest, after the presidential elections.
Dr. Mahmoud Ghozlan, Media Spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), said these were good decisions.
In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Dr. Ghozlan stated that, "The Brotherhood will back any decision that help expedite the transition process and the handover of power to civilians".
Further, the MB Media Spokesman said, "The fact that local council elections are held after the presidential elections is a good thing, too, especially since there is a need to manage and monitor the performance of the provinces and to boost development".
Last week, the MB called on the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) to announce the date of the presidential elections, stating that, "This is what the people demand and want to happen as soon as possible. Making this announcement will certainly reduce tension and absorb a lot of anger on the street".
It is worth noting that the declaration of election dates came after a meeting between SCAF and a parliamentary delegation which included Dr. Saad Katatni, Speaker of the People’s Assembly; Ashraf Thabit Saad Al-Din, PA Deputy Speaker; Saad Al-Husseini, Chairman of the Plan and Budget Committee; Dr. Essam El-Erian, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee; Abbas Mukhaimar, Chairman of the Committee on Defense and National Security; Hussein Ibrahim, President of the Freedom and Justice Party parliamentary bloc; Mustafa Bakri; and Dr. Mahmoud Saqqa, the liberal Wafd Party leader. The said meeting was also attended by Lieutenant General Sami Annan, Army Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and SCAF’s Vice President.
The meeting discussed a number of current issues and events, the latest of which was the violent incident in Port Said, as well as procedures for completion of the transitional phase after the elections of the Shura Council through the writing of the new Constitution, and also procedures for presidential elections followed by the handover of ruling power to civilian authorities.
