John McCain, senior United States Senator and former Republican presidential nominee, offered his congratulations, yesterday, to Dr. Saad Katatni, Speaker of the Egyptian People's Assembly, on winning the election for the parliamentary leadership post. McCain was accompanied by Anne Patterson, U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, in his meeting with Dr. Katatni.

A statement by the Office of Katatni said that the meeting, which lasted about an hour and a half, discussed the future of US-Egyptian ties and the strengthening of mutual relations between the Egyptian parliament and the U.S. Congress.

McCain’s meeting with Katatni came after a meeting he had with Hussein Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).

Talks between McCain and Katatni dealt with changes and developments affecting relations between Egypt and the USA after the recent tensions between the two countries over the issue of foreign funding of NGOs, in which the Egyptian judiciary brought charges against nineteen foreigners, including seven Americans, who have been barred from leaving Egypt.

Senator John McCain arrived in Cairo, with his accompanying delegation, coming from Qatar, on board a U.S. military airplane, to meet with Egyptian officials and work to ease tensions between the two countries.
