Father Bakhoum Abdul-Maseeh, Archbishop of the Church of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul in Mansoura, announced his rejection of the demands by some Coptic Church factions to withdraw from the Constituent Assembly (CA). In press statements, Bakhoum confirmed that the church will not withdraw, in order to continue its work, to help draft a constitution worthy of Egypt’s revolution. Earlier, on Friday, dozens of 'Maspero Youth Federation' movement members staged a protest outside Abbassiya Cathedral, demanding church withdrawal from the CA, the panel entrusted with authoring Egypt’s new Constitution. Protesters believe that the Church’s participation, staying on in the CA, lends the panel legitimacy. |
