Dr. Amr Darrag, Secretary-General of the Constituent Assembly (CA), affirmed that voting on the articles of the new Constitution within the CA will begin shortly – before the end of August 2012.

In a statement, Darrag said: “The CA’s Special Committees have almost completed their phase. Meanwhile, the Drafting Committee has already begun its work, and finished the Chapter on rights and freedoms.

“This week, we’ll be setting a date to start the vote of the CA’s General Assembly on articles of the Constitution. I expect that date to be sometime before the beginning of September 2012.”

Dr. Darrag further affirmed that the CA is keen for articles of the Constitution to achieve as wide a consensus as possible – from the outset, so that the matter does not go to a vote.

“According to established rules, articles should be accepted by at least 67% of the CA’s members. If this is not the case in the first round, a meeting is convened two days later – giving members an opportunity for further study and discussion – and a second round of voting is then held where articles should be accepted by at least 57% of CA members.”
