Yasser Mehrez, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman, said a large number of the group’s headquarters in Egypt were torched over the past months. A Brotherhood youth was killed in Damanhur. Thugs stormed the group’s news website (Ikhwanonline) office and assaulted its chief-editor.

"A large number of legal complaints were filed over the past months. There was no tangible action by the prosecution service. Summons and warrants issued for the arrest and questioning of a number of provocative figures who incited violence against Muslim Brotherhood and its political wing the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s headquarters are simply the first concrete steps in enforcing the law.

"Haters are wrong to portray the Public Prosecutor’s latest decisions and actions as acts of revenge. This is totally baseless. On the contrary, his decisions target a number of individuals who openly called for the torching of Muslim Brotherhood headquarters and the burning of Brotherhood youths themselves."

Mehrez further said that the Egyptian people are baffled by this patience in the face of violence and vandalism against public and private property.

"The people are demanding the application of the law to everyone, until justice prevails and everyone feels that there is indeed accountability and that anyone tampering with the security of the homeland will be held to task.

"The burning of headquarters, sabotage, vandalism and attacks on citizens have nothing to do with politics. Political competition must be far removed from vandalism and violence and savagery."
