The Egyptian Foreign Ministry denounced renewed violence against Muslims in Myanmar, expressing deep concern over these abhorrent atrocities which have now extended into several new regions - a serious shift in these attacks, turning into a systematic campaign targeting Muslims on sectarian and ethnic lines.
In a statement released on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said: "Egypt is watching with concern the steps taken by the Government of Myanmar to contain the crisis, and invites relevant authorities to take strict deterrent measures without delay against instigators of sedition, and to apply the rule of law to put an end to these acts of violence that target the lives and property of Muslim minorities in Myanmar. Moreover, the crisis urgently needs a radical comprehensive solution to prevent recurrence and to stop discrimination against Muslims, which contradicts with all international norms and conventions."
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry further urged the Myanmar government to respond to a request by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 2012 for the OIC’s contact group to visit the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar to develop an urgent plan to provide aid to the affected people. |
