At its Sunday evening session, Egypt’s Shura Council (SC) approved the report of its Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee on the implementation of the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC)’s decision on the political rights bill, regarding the eligibility of the President or the Supreme Committee for Elections to call for elections.

Dr. Ahmed Fahmi, SC Speaker, announced that the bill was referred back to the SCC to review amendments made by the SC based on the SCC’s earlier decision, after the approval of MPs and Justice Hatem Begato, Egypt’s Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.

Meanwhile, Dr. Essam El-Erian, head of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s parliamentary bloc, affirmed approval of the final wording of the bill’s text, calling on the Supreme Committee for Elections to prepare to issue a decision to hold legislative elections as soon as possible.

"We made amendments in this bill to the contrary of our opinions and our understanding of the Constitution, just to work to the text of the SCC."
