A statement by Dr. Essam El-Erian, the Freedom and Justice Party’s Vice-Chairman regarding the so-called transitional authorities’ decision to jail President Morsi, having kept him in an undisclosed military facility, without access to a lawyer, for almost a whole month since his forced removal from office by a military coup d'état:
The announcement of a decision to imprison the legitimate President of Egypt – who enjoys immunity and may not be tried except through special well-defined constitutional processes – in such questionable circumstances and timing, and in the absence of his lawyer, indeed in the absence of the most basic concepts of 'rule of law', illustrates the fascist nature of the confused military regime which is looking for a way out of the current impasse, which it caused itself.
Peaceful response will be witnessed in million-man rallies in liberty squares all over the country.
Our strength lies in our peacefulness. Our unity as a people against fascism, tyranny, injustice and corruption is the secret of our sure victory against the coup.
This utterly unjust jail decision is a warning to everyone who participated in the January (2011) Revolution regarding the fate which awaits them as 'Mubarak henchmen' return for revenge against the people. |
