Pro-Democracy Detainees Poisoned in Prison, Handcuffed in Hospital, Begin Hunger Strike

Amid the deafening silence of human rights institutions and activists in Egypt, opponents of the coup detained in Gharbiya Governorate (west of Cairo) suffer intolerable health conditions and violations to their human rights at the hands of coup authorities.

Dr. Khaled Issa, Professor of Orthopedics at Tanta University Faculty of Medicine and member of the administrative office of the Muslim Brotherhood in Gharbiya Governorate, was moved from a prison to the intensive care unit in Minshawi Hospital handcuffed by coup authorities.

Dr. Khaled Issa had been arrested from his clinic as he was seeing his patients, amid an exceptionally and unjustifiably heavy security presence of coup forces storming the clinic.

Brotherhood legal sources said that a number of political prisoners in Beni Suef, at Abu Salim Central Security Forces camp, suffered mass food poisoning after eating contaminated food, which led to severe diarrhea and vomiting.

In a statement to the media on Sunday, lawyers for the detainees said the prison administration gave first-aid to treat the most critical cases.

In the same vein, a number of political detainees in Assiut (south of Cairo) on Sunday began a hunger strike in protest of the oppressive and abusive conditions inside the prisons in which they are being held, and of coup authorities repeatedly extending their detention without any legal basis, in addition to what they described as the politicization of the prosecution service and the judiciary, that clearly collaborate with detectives and national security operatives.

In a statement, the political detainees said they were put in cells unfit for humans, which certainly violates their human rights, and complained about lack of health and social care inside the prison.
