Sawaseya Center for Human Rights and Prevention of Discrimination released a statement on October 29, 2006, condemning the government ‘s policy which discriminates among ruling party candidates and contestants from other parties or groups. The statement said that numerous complaints have been lodged by candidates who have related accounts of torments they encounter only to get their candidacy papers. “ This policy belies claims by Minister of Manpower Dr. Aisha Abdul Hadi that the Union election will be that fair and free ones”, the statement said, lamenting that a candidate has to have his papers endorsed by several official bodies within the Union and other official bodies, with candidates laboring to find the officials who in turn place obstacles and red tape in the way of the non ruling party candidates. The statement related accounts on irregularities and double standard policy on the part of the Union, calling on the government to renounce such a policy and allow workers to freely choose their representatives to the Union and workers’ committees nationwide. It is noted that the government has used legal or illegal means to stop the Muslim Brotherhood candidates from standing for the election. It even issues decrees which ostensibly place obstacles in the way of all candidates but in fact these obstacles are mainly placed in the face of the MB members to deny them winning a single seat either in the Union or in the boards of directors within companies and other worksites nationwide. |
