Egypt: MB To Hold Press Conference On Labor Unions Elections

 The Muslim Brotherhood on October 28, 2006, will hold a press conference at the Lawyers’ Syndicate to voice their position toward the Labor Union election slated for the first week of November next, which will be held at three phases in line with the recent parliamentary election last year.

 The Muslim Brotherhood on October 28, 2006, will hold a press conference at the Lawyers’ Syndicate to voice their position toward the Labor Union election slated for the first week of November next, which will be held at three phases in line with the recent parliamentary election last year.

 The press conference, to be held at 2 o’clock, is mainly to show the repressive measures taken by the government against the Muslim Brotherhood candidates including denying them their election credentials and posting instructions to companies and factories to stand up against them, as well as stopping them from promoting for their slogans under the pretext of the illegality of religious slogans in the Labors’ Union election.

 The latest and repressive measures against the Muslim Brotherhood candidates was the detention of five of them on the 19th of this month after the security forces sealed off the area of the Union and denied candidates access to the union premises, and even launched a random detention campaign in the street.

 Saber Abul Fotouh, the Parliamentary Bloc member and the group’s coordinator in the workers election, had earlier last week said the group would  field candidates to the Labors’ Union election in spite of these repressive measures, stressing that these candidates will keep resolve to exercise their right to participate.

 The MB also had announced before that it would field its candidates in no more than 15% of the total seats in companies boards of directors , 50% of the seats of the general syndicates, as well as share with others in 1700 of the Union’s subsidiary election ballot boxes. The Muslim Brotherhood will for the first time field women , 8 in number, to stand for the election on the Labors’ Union ticket.

The MB platform in the Labors’ Union election is founded on three axes: mainly to preserve workers’ rights, stand up to the abuse of privatization and early pension programs which led to so many layoffs among workers, as well as enhancing and preservation of the Egyptian industry.
