Military coup authorities in Egypt moved in secret on Tuesday Mohamed Mahdi Akef, the former Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, from Maadi Hospital where he was receiving treatment to Aqrab prison, one of Egypt's toughest and most notorious prisons. Muslim Brotherhood sources said the reason of his transfer, despite his age (87 years) and his failing health, is not known yet. Military coup authorities arrested Akef just after announcing the coup against President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Akef was transferred to the hospital several months later, following the rapid deterioration of his health in junta jails. An unjust, null and void sentence jailed him for 25 years. |
