I certainly perform my duty for the sake of the homeland. I do my best to fulfill the responsibilities I was entrusted to carry by the Egyptian people. I appeared before the judiciary – which I had the privilege to work in before I was appointed President of the Central Auditing Authority (CAA) – in the hope of getting justice, as sought by any citizen who stands before the good independent judiciary that is not swayed by the Sultans' gold or the threat of his sword.

Paying bail would have been vindication and acceptance of the malicious accusations and sham investigations, giving the false impression that I accept them.

I refuse to start a tradition where any head of the CAA that comes after me is harassed as he does his duty to protect public money and reveals the facts to the people, pursuant to the articles of the Constitution and the law. I hope this institution's integrity is maintained. It must remain a guarantee for every citizen, as the corruption watchdog.

I am happy to stand before Egyptian justice on charges of protecting public money and respecting the Constitution and the law.

I refused to pay bail. I will appear in a session on Tuesday – June 7, 2016 before the First New Cairo Misdemeanor Court.

Hisham Geneina
