The Egyptian Coordinating Committee of Rights and Freedom (ECRF) strongly condemns the coup regime's Interior Ministry for sending in security forces to beat up, arrest and detain students in the non-violent demonstrations that started on June 27, 2016 to protest the leaking of national high school exams, then the announcement of repeating exams, especially with extreme negligence and inaction by the current regime which failed to stop the leaking of exams. This should have been sufficient reason to open an urgent investigation – from the very start. Instead, coup authorities allowed the situation to deteriorate, with students paying a heavy price.

ECRF affirms that a good education and equal opportunities are inherent rights for all children, approved by local and international constitutions and treaties. It is not acceptable at all that these rights are violated by any ministry or ruling regime.

This would threaten the whole society, its present as well as its future.

ECRF urges relevant authorities to immediately release all detained students and – indeed – to give them the opportunity to express their views and claim their rights. After all, they are the promising future, and society must help them claim all their rights
