After a month and half of waiting for a decision, State Security officials refused to grant Mr. Akef, Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, and a group of the MB, the permission to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah rituals; a visit to the Holy Shrines in Makka and Madina.

Despite of earlier reassurances by high ranking officers with the state security apparatus to allow Mr. Akef and his group to travel,  government officials denied Mr. Akef his constitutional right and declined several times to allow him to travel without giving any specific reasons.

The decision also included Mr. Akef press secretary, his office manager, in addition to Mrs. Akef and their daughter.

Mr. Akef was scheduled to leave to Makka on Tuesday 17th of Ramadan (October 10th) for a three day visit before heading to Maddina, the two most sacred cities for Muslims where Islam’s holiest shrines are located.

Government officials had also earlier prevented Mr. Goma’a Ameen, senior MB leader, from traveling to Saudi Arabia.

It is unclear why law abiding citizens were deprived of their very basic right to travel freely, nonetheless, to perform a religious ritual in the Holy Land.
