State Security authorities in Assiut, south Egypt, on October 9, 2006, prevented Muslim Brotherhood members from organizing an Iftar party.

The police forces arrived at the gathering place in the afternoon and cordoned off the room where the Iftar was to be held, denying guests entery, while preventing those already inside from leaving the buliding. Moreover, more than 350 meals were taken by police to the State Security Headquarters in Assiut.

Head of the MB administrative bureau in Assiut Dr. Mohamed Kamal, condemned this act and called it an unjustified escalation, adding that the security personnel themselves witness that the Muslim Brotherhood observe the law and order in all their activities.

Surprised at the incident, Kamal said that he had earlier telephoned the security officer on duty and confirmed the latter approval of the Iftar party, but he was surprised to see the place cordoned off and security men "arresting the meals”, he sarcastically said.
