On Sunday July 17, Cairo witnessed numerous political activities in show of solidarity with the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine. The day began with massive demonstrations and ended with a conference under the auspices of the Press Syndicate, which was attended by prominent figures from five main syndicates, including the Press syndicate, the Bar Association, the Doctor’s syndicate, the Teachers’ syndicate and the Trade Union.
A statement by the resistance leaderships was read by Dr. Refaat Sayed Ahmed, which reaffirmed that the morale among its fighters is high, and called on the Arab nations to continue to show its support even through a demonstrations. The statement also indicated that the destruction of the Lebanese infrastructure will not undermine its ability to inflict more harm on the Israeli troops, and it (resistance) able to continue the fight for long years.
For his part, Palestinian thinker Abdul Kader Yasseen said that the Hizbullah’s True Pledge operation has restored the Arab dignity and revived sense of nationalism after years of setbacks. He condemned all Arab leaders who condemned Hizbullah operation, especially Jordanian king Abdullah, saying that they only care of their own interests.
Speaking for the Arab Lawyers Union, Mr. Abdul Azim el Maghraby said the Arab rulers and the resistance topped by Hamas and Hizbullah are two worlds apart, depicting the former as selfish and power seekers while hailing as brave the resistance, reaffirming that Hamas was chosen by its people on the basis of a well prepared political program. He lamented that the Arab rulers are hostile to Hamas because they see that its existence does not work for their own interests. Mr. Al Maghraby called on the Egyptian and Arab peoples to stage daily outrageous demonstrations in support of their Palestinian and Lebanese brothers.
The coordinator of the Press Syndicate’s Committee for Supporting Resistance, Mr. Adel al Mashad, also condemned the reaction of the Arab rulers towards the Israeli military operations in Palestine and Lebanon. He said that this disgraceful position has given a green light to the US- backed Zionists to do what they want. Al Mashad pointed out that the very ultimate target of the (Israeli) war on Lebanon is to disarm Hizbullah and turn it into a political party and eliminate resistance which humiliated the American armies in Iraq and Afghanistan; he called on all Arab countries to move before it is too late.
Kifaya representative Mr. Abdul Aziz al Husseiny tracked the deteriorating position of the Arab rulers toward the resistance, saying that they formerly condemned the aggression, then they stopped condemnation of aggression to turn to the worst: to condemn the resistance itself. Al Husseiny reaffirmed that the Arab nations will not achieve any victory on the "Zionist enemy" as long as these governments persist. He added that resistance is a legitimate right enshrined in the international laws and norms, calling on the Arab peoples to speedily organize demonstrations and raise funds for backing the Palestinian and Lebanese people, calling also for boycotting the "Zionist -American" enemy. A Press Syndicate member, Iman Essa, lashed out at the Egyptian regime for its continued relations with the "Zionist" enemy, which she said has gone as far as to sell the Egyptian gas to them. She strongly criticized the passage of article 102 of the Publication Law which makes it a crime punishable by imprisonment any criticism of heads of state, calling on the organizations and parties concerned to step in and stand up against the American intervention with the national Egyptian press which publishes pro American articles. Though different affiliations and trends, the conferees had something in common: boycotting Israeli and American goods and expulsion of the "Zionist ambassadors from Arab countries, as well as backing the resistance of Hamas and Hizbullah. |
