Under the slogan "Alexandria Without Smoking", the Muslim Brotherhood members of Parliament in Alexandria city launched a campaign to combat smoking in public places in collaboration with the local unions, companies, mosques and churches. The campaign will make available to the public 16 clinics for treatment of smokers throughout the city free of charge.

Dr. Hamdy Hassan (picture), the  Muslim Brotherhood parliamentary bloc spokesman, said that the deputies wanted to arouse the public awareness of health hazards of smoking and its impact on national economy which losses more ten billion pounds annually to cigarettes. 

Dr. Hassan, a physician himself, indicated that 47 % of the Egyptians are smokers and warned of the spread of smoking among teenagers where 30% of prep school students smoke cigarettes    and the number of female teenage smokers has risen from 5 % to 13% over the five past years. Among college students, 20% of females smoke cigarettes according to Dr. Hassan’s statistics.
