The relationship between Muslims and Christians was reasonable until the last few decades. Many of the Muslims and Christians of the Middle East used to visit and exchange all types of gifts during the feasts of the two great religions. There were always mutual warm feeling and respect between the two communities.

Things started to change lately especially when the CIA started recruiting young Muslims to fight the Russians in the Afghanistan war. Our people in their naivety joined in the struggle without much thought because it seems that the struggle was worth it. The American benefited by wining its battle against Russians without much loss except of some cash.

The idealist kids who saw the killing of the “infidel” Russians came home different. They now have the military training but there found neither freedom nor ideal Islam in their own countries. The American victory utilizing the efforts of the Mogahideen with the American support did not materialized in friendship between America and these Mojahideens. These young men have to convince themselves that they were doing the will of Allah in defending Islam, but when they came home, they felt stranger. They turned their efforts in defeating the regional dictators.

Same government started their campaign against these young fighters (whom they encouraged earlier to fight for the cause of Allah). Arresting, persecutions and jail were their destinations. The fighters turned into violent war against these regimes by attacking police, army and foreigners. In addition, some of the radicals attacked their Christian neighbors as a revenge for what they have seen done to their Muslim fellows during the war in Afghanistan and the Balkans.

The government used sectarian violence as a way of controlling both populations. They hush the Christians by appearing as if they are protecting them from radical Islam, and they appease the Muslims by allowing fanatics to attack Christians. They divert the struggle the people for freedom and justice for all to a Muslim-Christian problem. This technique allowed them to control the population without real challenge.

Christians were angry that their families, churches, and their faith is violated by radical Muslims, so they ask for help from the government (which is the source of their misery). Muslim on the other hand feels that there is pressure by the West on their government to protect the Christians minority (which is not true) while they are jailing and destroying the lives of Muslims Brotherhood and other religious organization. Therefore, the hate of these groups for Christians kept increasing.

It is time for both communities to be united against all violence against Muslims who are persecuted by the government and Christians who are violated by the government. It is time for Copts to stand beside their persecuted Muslims (including those who committed crime against Christians) and for the Muslims to stand by their Christians brothers and sisters against all violation (by radicals) against Christians.

If we stand together as members of the same family against all forms of discrimination, we ALL can create a better country for our children and for generation to come.
God bless our people, our countries, and our freedom.
