A famous Egyptian comedian and a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, Adel Imam, asserted that the victory of the Muslim Brotherhood in the latest Egyptian legislative elections "is the result of a popular will that must be respected"

At a Cultural Forum held last Wednesday evening at the Opera House, Adel Imam wondered, “After the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) obtained 20 percent of the seats of the People’s Assembly (Egypt’s parliament), why should the MB be still called ‘a banned group’”?!! What then are the criteria for legitimacy if winning one fifth of the seats of parliament is not enough to be legitimate?

MB garnered 88 seats in the People’s Assembly, out of a total of 444, i.e. one fifth of the total number of seats, despite the numerous violations the Egyptian regime has committed against the MB candidates, covering a whole spectrum of arrests, detentions, thuggery and bullying, preventing by gunfire voters from casting their ballots for the MB candidates and intimidating both.
