The Executive Committee of the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe (FIOE) had devoted its last meeting in Brussels on 3rd and 4th February, 2006 to follow-up the issue of the cartoon depictions defaming the Prophet Muhammad, by a number of newspapers in several European states, and the resulting reactions and consequences on both the European and international levels.

Following are the resolutions agreed by the committee:

1- The condemnation of the Danish newspaper which initiated the publication of the insulting drawings and the papers that subsequently republished them. This has hurt the feelings of Muslims because of the abuse caused to Muslim sanctuaries and sacred figures. This may lead to acrimony among different communities in our society.

2- FIOE urges Muslims in Europe to intensify their efforts towards more positive interaction with the general public in order to elaborate their viewpoint concerning such blasphemous and defamatory drawings. FIOE will shortly issue a document on this matter.

3- FIOE urges Muslims to deal with the issue within the legal boundaries and avoid any emotional or irresponsible reaction, and to work jointly with various religious, political and media bodies in Europe in order to provide more protection for freedom of belief and bringing more harmony and stability to our European societies. A special statement from FIOE addressed to European Muslims will follow suit.

4- FIOE will form a delegation to meet the relevant European bodies and officials in order to clarify the Islamic viewpoint on this issue and to explore various ways of cooperation towards reaching adequate solution(s).

5- FIOE invites all Islamic organisations in Europe to organise cultural functions introducing Islam to the public and focusing especially on the character of Prophet Muhammad, his humane values and virtuous ethics which he had preached and would inspire everyone to work for peaceful coexistence and social harmony.

6- While appreciating the positive stances of many religious, political and media figures who have condemned the publication of the drawings as an irresponsible act and called for distinguishing freedom of speech from insulting the feelings of any community or mocking sacred symbols of any religion, FIOE calls everyone to join efforts aiming towards solving the present situation.
