Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood claims 14 members detained in Alexandria
Police have detained 14 members of Egypt’s largest Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, during dawn raids on their houses in the country’s second-largest city, Alexandria, a group leader said on Friday.

Ali Abdel Fattah claimed the members were activists in the outlawed group’s election campaign, but police said they had no knowledge of the arrests.

“The police are back to their old habits of cracking down on the Brotherhood,” Fattah said, claiming that Egyptian authorities were looking for five other Brotherhood campaigners.

Brotherhood officials have said almost 500 of the group’s activists have been arrested since three-stage parliamentary elections began on Nov. 9. Most were later released.

Four Brotherhood members are contesting Saturday polls in Alexandria, on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast north of Cairo, the capital.

The Brotherhood’s surprising success in the polls - it has already won 47 seats, more than tripling its total in the outgoing parliament - has increased tensions with the ruling party headed by President Hosni Mubarak, which has long dominated the 454-seat parliament.
