The Center for American Progress has just released a report of its findings from a recent trip to Pakistan. Working off of the notion that the U.S. should develop a long-term partnership with Pakistan, Lawrence J. Korb, Brian Katulis, and Colin Cookman offer ten policy recommendations for formulating this approach. The recommendations include:

  • Initiating comprehensive engagement with a broad range of Pakistani actors to include think tanks, lawyers groups, NGOs, the military, and the general public.
  • Strengthening the police and judiciary and their role in countering terrorism
  • Increasing assistance to internally displaced persons
  • Increasing bilateral development assistance to advance Pakistani civilian government capacity
  • Reforming the leading institutions of U.S. diplomacy and foreign development assistance
