Taimor Abdul Ghani, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood  parliamentary bloc , submitted a questioning to the Prime Minister on news published in the newspapers which stated that nearly a third of all children are malnourished, according to a new report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) due to extreme poverty. This illustrates an increase by almost 20 % during the 2005-2008 periods. 

According to a new report compiled by the Ministry of Health and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). ”The 2008 health demographic survey, which was  published in March 2009, recorded a 6 percent increase in malnutrition which is severe enough to stunt growth in children under five, raising the percentage of stunted Egyptian toddlers to 29% from 23% in 2000.

 
Taimor asserted that "Some government policies have adversely affected the nutrition of the poorest where it was published in the report that malnutrition of children was partly attributable to the government's decision to cull millions of chickens in 2007”.

"Since 1991 Egypt has embarked on economic reform programmes which have not necessarily helped the underprivileged sector in society," he stated. A July report by Egypt's General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, revealed that 66% of the wealth generated in Egypt is sector specific, benefiting only those directly employed by the sector rather than the economy as a whole.
