Six Muslim Brotherhood members of parliament (MP) received an invitation from the Egyptian German Society to meet with a high level German delegation affiliated with the opposition Socialist party. The meeting, which was held in one of Cairo hotels, was attended by other prominent Egyptian politicians and analysts among them Dr. Amr el Chobaky of Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS).
MP, Dr. Akram Al Shaer was one of the participants and stated to Ikhwanweb that meeting revolved mainly around the future of democracy in Egypt. The German delegation sought to know the MB’s position toward a number of issues including the group’s position toward Israel, Camp David treaty, tourism and status of woman in the group’s literature, and whether the Ikhwan would accept rotation of power.
Al Shaer affirmed that the German delegation discussed the issue of separating of religion and state; a concept implemented in Europe since the 17th century. The Muslim Brotherhood delegate pointed out to their German counterparts that it is impractical to apply this concept in Muslim countries, citing the nature of Islam which encompasses all aspects of life, including politics.
The Muslim Brotherhood clarified its stance on tourism in Egypt and explained that they believe "The state is obliged to protect tourists and ensure their safety while visiting the country and that tourists should be allowed to drink alcoholic beverages if they abide by laws and regulations of their host country” Al Shaer added.
